Last week was a turning point for our movement: the first big win for mobilization on the city level.
After a year of work by members of the Climate Mobilization Hoboken, a resolution passed unanimously through the Hoboken City Council on November 1 calling for mobilization to city-wide carbon neutrality by 2027.
The bipartisan resolution, co-sponsored by council members and mayoral candidates Ravinder Bhalla and Jennifer Giattino, concludes:
“WHEREAS, Hoboken must be a leader in the fight to protect our country by embarking on a climate mobilization;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Hoboken will officially endorse a citywide mobilization to attempt carbon-neutrality by 2027 and initiate an effort to reduce and remove greenhouse gas emissions.”
This is what legislation based firmly in climate truth looks like.
The full text of the resolution can be found here, and it is a full-throated statement of what we all know to be true: that the climate targets outlined in the Paris agreement are madness and that it’s up to us, everywhere to take on the work of adequately addressing this crisis.
This began with ordinary people with no previous lobbying or political experience coming together and meeting at their local library. It resulted in the passage of the first resolution of this scope by any city in the United States.
Now, let’s follow their example and take it to cities all over the country.
